ARSENALāS āDARK ARTSā
Premier League clubs complain to PGMOL about Arsenalās use of ādark artsā
Premier League clubs have sent concerns about āgamesmanshipā and Arsenalās use of the ādark artsā to the PGMOL. The officiating group also confirmed that Myles Lewis-Skelly was booked for telling David Raya to waste time during Sundayās bout against Manchester City. New footage suggests manager Mikel Arteta asked the teenager to relay the message.
The main source of delay came through goal-kicks, with each one taking Raya 45.3 seconds on average ā meaning that nine minutes of the game were wasted. Thatās almost a minute longer than the next highest this season. Arsenal have delayed restarts more than any other Premier League team. On average, Artetaās side delay corners, freekicks and throw-ins by 34 seconds, a second more than Aston Villa.
But Arteta dismissed claims that his side engages in ādark artsā saying that he prefers āfacts to wordsā. In fairness, despite the time wasted, Opta calculated that the ball was in play for 63:28 minutes overall, the fifth-longest total in a game so far this season. Still, coaches and analysts complained about Arsenalās apparent gamesmanship last season and have re-upped the issue with the PGMOL. Former Arsenal boss and Fifa chief Arsene Wenger reiterated last year that time-wasting rules will improve and āthe team who wants to play [should] be rewardedā.

PREMIER LEAGUE OFFICIATING
Howard Webb to avoid Premier League clubsā criticism over referring by avoiding Thursdayās meeting
Former referee Howard Webb was set to sit down with Premier League clubs who are seeking questions on refereeing standards this season. The questioning was meant to take place during the leagueās shareholdersā meeting on Thursday. But new reports say that the PGMOL chief is now not attending the meeting ā and will leave it to Tony Scholes, the Premier League chief football officer, to answer clubsā questions.
Several top flight clubs have expressed anger about what they claim are mistakes by officials in the early weeks of the season. Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest and Leicester City are said to be the least happy.
The criticism comes after consecutive weekends with controversial officiating calls. Last week, Leicester manager Steve Cooper claimed he had proof that the PGMOL used āfalse imagesā for VAR in his sideās 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace. Meanwhile, Forest are angry over a red card issued to their head coach Nuno Espirito Santo in their 2-2 draw with Brighton on Sunday. Nuno, Morgan Gibbs-White and Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler have all been charged by the FA following their red cards. PGMOL believes many of the decisions that clubs dispute were, in fact, correct.

ā W.S: āYes, but there must be SOME history behind the fixture - for example, Bayern against Real is considered as a classic. However, if they didn't clash a few times at late UCL stages, it wouldn't be considered as one.ā
ā M.B: āIf it just feels like another game in terms of atmosphere of course not, there needs to be an actual level of emotion towards the other team.ā
āļø P.T: āI want to see high-level football with players that put everything on the line. But it shouldn't be at the expense of the playersā safety or the flow of play. In recent years, the City vs Liverpool rivalry found the right balance.ā
