Head Start

VAR vote incoming

Premier League clubs will vote next month on whether to scrap VAR.

Yup. Itā€™s really got to that point.

Look, we know that there are three things you shouldnā€™t speak about in public (or if youā€™re a football newsletter):

  • Politics.

  • Religion.

  • VAR.

But, today is the exception.

The only reason the Premier League budged was because Wolves put together a list of arguments for why it should be axedā€¦

Thereā€™s a long list so here are Wolvesā€™ best arguments against VAR:

  • Impact on goal celebrations and the spontaneous passion that makes football special.

  • Frustration and confusion in stadiums.

  • Exceeding the original purpose of VAR, which was to correct clear and obvious errors, by now overanalysing subjective decisions and compromising the fluidity and integrity of the game.

  • Erosion of trust and reputation, with VAR fuelling absurd corruption allegations.

If you didnā€™t know this list was about VAR, youā€™d think it had to do with the latest Netflix romance drama.

But itā€™s understandable why fans and clubs are so passionately against VAR, especiallyā€¦

**promise weā€™re not spoiling the R1 end-of-season awards**

And the most recent National Supporters Survey last June found that two-thirds of fans were against VAR.

But - and here this out - the Premier League board is directly opposed to the proposal of scrapping VAR. They say correct decisions increased from 82 to 96% under VAR.

Route One take: For the vote to go ahead, Wolves will need 13 other clubs to agree with them which is possibleā€¦ but we donā€™t think the vote will be a simple yes or no.

Measures are already in place to introduce semi-automated VAR mid-way through the next seasonā€¦ hardly the act of a league looking to scrap the system.

Thatā€™s right, FIFA is exploring the impact of moving domestic football matches abroad.

The worldā€™s governing body has set up a new working group which will be formed to ā€œissue recommendationsā€ on the topic. The group will consist of around 10-15 members from member associations, clubs, players and more.

How would it work?

Itā€™s similar to ā€œGame 39ā€ which was proposed in 2008 - where some Premier League clubs wanted to play an extra round of matches at neutral venues outside England.

But, this time aroundā€¦ itā€™s a little different.

Why?

Well, itā€™s the Premier League clubs that now say they have no plan of playing league games in different countries.

It looks as though other leagues are leading the proposal asā€¦

I guess the question is: can Haaland score on a sunny day in Los Angeles? Hmm, we think so.
